Dokdo Misrepresentation Corrected on Major French Website

<2012.07.03>

A major French map service website that had previously failed to display even the shapes of Ulleungdo and Dokdo has now corrected this error!

Jo Han-jae, a VANK member and history major at Kyungpook National University, discovered the issue on October 7, 2011, and reported it through VANK’s correction campaign platform, the 21st Century Yi Sun-sin Project (http://korea.prkorea.com).

Following continuous monitoring, VANK has confirmed that as of today, the map service has been updated to correctly display both Dokdo and Ulleungdo.

The site in question is operated by Mappy, a subsidiary of the prominent French publishing group PagesJaunes Groupe, known for its online and offline directories similar to the Yellow Pages.
With over 20 years of experience in mapping services, Mappy is widely used across France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Italy.

Mappy’s services are accessible not only via PC but also through mobile applications for iPhone and Android devices.
The platform is especially popular for its navigation, geographic, and travel information, and its influence is evidenced by the 57,952 fans on its official Facebook page.

Before Correction:
Ulleungdo and Dokdo were not even shown on the map—not even their shapes were displayed.

After Correction:
The shapes of Ulleungdo and Dokdo have started to be properly displayed on the map.

The report and correction efforts of a single VANK member played a pivotal role in restoring the rightful display of Ulleungdo and Dokdo on the map.

VANK will continue to work together with its members to correct misinformation not only on English-language websites, but also across French and other multilingual platforms regarding Ulleungdo and Dokdo.

Finding an error is already halfway toward correcting it.

So if you come across Dokdo being misrepresented, or if the East Sea is wrongly labeled, don’t just pass by—take action with VANK.

Your individual efforts, one by one, will lead to the world recognizing Dokdo and the East Sea correctly and respectfully.
